About the Event
About the talk
Computer simulation modelling has played an instrumental role in designing, analysing, and optimising real-world systems to inform decision making. This talk traces the evolution of computer simulation within operations research, from its pre-computer origins to modern advancements, highlighting milestones in hardware, software, and methodologies. It explores paradigms such as agent-based modeling, discrete-event simulation, and system dynamics, referencing impactful case studies from both international and South African contexts. The presentation also examines the transformative potential of agentic AI and AI-assisted model development, drawing parallels and exploring emerging trends. By reflecting on historical lessons, the talk aims to inspire innovation while upholding the methodological rigour that defines OR and encourages dialogue on simulation’s role in addressing complex challenges.
