National Student Competitions
The Society organises student competitions in two independent categories on an annual basis, namely a competition on honours or fourth-year level of study and a competition on masters level of study. Supervising lecturers may nominate written projects or theses completed by students at their respective institutions during the preceding calendar year for participation in these competition categories during any particular year.
The objectives of the competitions are
-
to propagate the use of operations research on tertiary level of study,
-
to encourage the inclusion of project work in operations research courses, and
-
to bring the Operations Research Society of South Africa to the attention of students and staff at universities and technikons in South Africa.
The prestigious Gerhard Geldenhuys Medal is awarded to the winner of the honours or fourth-year category, while the prestigious Theodor Stewart Medal is awarded to the winner of the masters category.
More information on these competition categories, including the due date and guidelines for submissions, adjudication criteria, and how to submit an entry, may be accessed via the links in the category menus on the left.
The winners of both competition categories are announced at the Gala Dinner of the annual national conference.
