In this edition of Get to Know the Members of ORSSA, we feature Patrick Reynolds, a member of the Executive Committee serving as Head of Digital. From managing ORSSA’s online presence to helping keep members connected, Patrick plays an important role in the society’s digital engagement.

What is your academic and professional background?
"I have a Computer Science Degree, with experience as a software developer."
How (and when) did you first get involved with ORSSA?
"I first got involved in ORSSA when doing an MSc which was later in my career, only in 2017, and I was introduced by my supervisor and ex-ORSSA president Prof Fanie Terblanche."
What position do you hold on Exec and for how long have you had this position?
"Head of Digital, which was previously called Webmaster, from around 2019."
Tell us a bit more about what your role includes on the Exec.
"Support the society’s digital channels, online presence, website etc. Improve operational efficiency, security and adherence to data protection and related regulations."
Have you had any other positions on the Exec of ORSSA (and if so, when)?
"No, this is the only position I have help on Exec".
What do you feel is the biggest benefit of being a member of ORSSA?
"To be able to engage with like-minded individuals both within industry and academia."
What excites you about the field of OR?
"The bridges across different disciplines, such as Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Economics with application across various industries."
What skills do you think OR students should focus on developing today?
"Critical thinking and problem solving skills. Re-evaluate/reconsider the notions of “truth” and misinformation, be curious and open-minded, consider different viewpoints and diverse perspectives."
