Dear Colleagues:

As you may remember from our last council meeting in Prague, Horst W. Hamacher from the University of Kaiserslautern, has started the web page "24 Hours OR" at

http://optimierung.mathematik.uni-kl.de/EURO24OR/.

The idea of the web page is to promote Operations Research and its potential in problem solving for all kinds of problems and to use this page as part of our public relation initiative to show the public, in particular young people and decision makers in (European and national) politics what OR is about. The idea gains in strength if we manage to show that all European countries are involved in this. I would envision a situation, where in addition to representing the 24 hours of a day, in which a problem is solved by OR methods, we would also spread the projects among all the member countries of EURO.

I therefore, urge every country, represented by you as member of the EURO council to participate by contributing to the web page either personally or by encouraging one of your country (wo)men to participate. Attached you will find a call for participation describing how to present a contribution.

If you need more information on the "24 Hours OR" project, please check the web page

http://optimierung.mathematik.uni-kl.de/EURO24OR/

or contact Horst or Akin Tanatmis, who works for the project at <hamacher@mathematik.uni-kl.de> or <Tanatmis@mathematik.uni-kl.de>

With best regards,

Martine Labbé President of EURO

Tertiary Institutions in South Africa

Some South African tertiary institutions offering qualifications in OR:

Operations Research is an inter-disciplinary field; hence it is possible to train as an operations researcher in many different ways. For example, some universities and technikons offer bachelor's degrees and diplomas in operations research; others in quantitative management, decision sciences or in management science. At some universities students enroll for bachelor's degrees in basic mathematical sciences, like statistics or applied mathematics, and then focus on operations research for their course work. There are also a number of different levels of qualification, such as diplomas, BSc or BCom degrees, honours degrees, masters degrees and PhDs. Kindly contact the webmaster if you want your department listed here.
